Davos 2010 – Day 2

January 29, 2010

Another corker of a day.  Managed to talk to amazing people like President Bill Clinton, Jimmy Wales etc.  It all started with the Roundtable lunch on Education, Technology and Philanthropy.  Melinda Gates was amazing – I think it should be called the Melinda and Bill Gates foundation as it is clear to me that it is Melinda that is a driving force of it.

The Israeli President Shamon Peres was not so inspirational.  He recommended that compulsory military service was a good idea.  He said it gives young people discipline and stops them being lazy.  I feel the world does not need more soldiers…

I managed to catch many people afterwards about One Young World and BraveNewTalent.  I spoke to Clinton about the plans.  He has asked to send some information so we will try to see if he could do a video link for Haiti.  We now have a Haiti delegate coming to One Young World.

I also discussed it with Victor Pinchuk, the Ukrainian billionaire.  It would be fantastic to get someone like Mr Pinchuk to back our Facebook Delegates – see this at http://www.OneYoungWorld.com/BNT

After a great day the parties started.  I started at the South Africa party, Zuma’s representative for Fifa told me how South Africa is the perfect place to hold the world cup – apparently South Africa has one of the best infrastructures in the world.

Following this the British party started – I had good chat with Lord Mandleson, Alistair Darling, Stelios and met a group of really cool people from BBC and HSBC.  Stelios came with us to have dinner at the YGL Party.  There were some amazing people there – particularly interesting was Prince Harkom of Norway (who will be coming to One Young World), Robert Moritz, Chairman of PWC and Kai Diekmann (Chief Editor of Bild).  I heard about how Kai built up from the bottom – starting as a journalist and has now run Europe’s largest newspaper for over 10 years – www.Bild.de.

Following this I headed over to the McKinsey party.  This was lots of fun.  I bumped into my friend Lucy Cooper who is helping to organise Mark Foster, CEO of Accenture.  This party was great fun but I am sure wont compare to the Google Party…

We then went on with the Liquid Chefs, the former Miss World and the Face of South Africa to the Piano bar where we were until about 4am…!  LOTS OF DANCING!  This is the Liquid Chefs Beatboxing talent….
